Chasing the Sun

A Week of Photo Walks with the Kids

As a photographer, I often find myself chasing the light, and this week, I had the perfect excuse to do so with my kids in tow. We set out each evening for photo walks, seeking the golden hues of the sunset, capturing moments of beauty along the way. The week was filled with adventure, from an evening at the Oyster Wharf to exploring the quiet shores of Woy Woy and, finally, a breathtaking sunrise at Tascott. Here’s a look back at our week of light, laughter, and memories made.

Paddy’s Oyster Wharf

Sunset at Paddy’s Oyster Wharf

Our week began with a visit to the Oyster Wharf, a local spot that's known for its rustic charm and quiet beauty at dusk. The kids were excited to get a few shots and I was raring to go. The sky was gloomy but there were patches of light that we held out hope of brief sunset rays painting the sky. We took a slow stroll along the waterfront snapping shots through the bushes and getting different angles of the Oyster Wharf .

It was there that we unexpectedly bumped into a couple of local photographers who lived across the road. They were friendly and we had a quick chat about what a great spot it is even if the light was not quite as we had hoped.

Woy Woy – Boats and Sandflies

The next evening, we headed to Woy Woy, to catch a glimpse of the boats and perhaps some local wildlife. As we arrived, the sun was beginning to dip, but we could see the low clouds building just before sunset was due. The boats were a beautiful sight, their reflections shimmering in the calm water as the evening light faded.

But, as beautiful as the scene was, we quickly realised we weren’t the only ones enjoying the evening — the sandflies had arrived in full force. The kids seemed to be unaffected but I seemed to be irresistible to the little pests as they nipped at my ankles. Despite the annoyance of the sandflies, we managed to get some great shots of the boats. The sunset did not quite happen for us again but it was a fun evening out anyway. It was a bit of a chaotic evening, but one full of laughter and resilience.

Tascott – A Glorious Burning Sunrise

The week ended with a spectacular sunrise at Tascott Waterfront, though this one was a solo adventure. On my way to work, I couldn't resist pulling over when I saw the sky starting to light up with vibrant hues of red and orange. The sky lit up over the water, casting a warm glow across the horizon before sunrise. It was a moment of pure magic — one of those rare mornings when everything aligns perfectly, and you can’t help but feel in awe of nature's beauty.

I took a few minutes to soak it all in, snapping a few photos of the stunning scene. The colours were so intense, it almost felt like a dream. It was a perfect end to a week filled with exploration, creativity, and family bonding. Even though I was on my way to work on the day of another train strike, this brief moment of peace made it the most fulfilling part of my day!

Reflection

Our week of evening photo walks chasing sunsets was more than just a creative outlet. It was a chance to slow down, enjoy the outdoors, and experience the world through the eyes of my children. Each evening was a new adventure, a new location, and a new way to see the light. Whether we were talking with local photographers or swatting at sandflies, it was a week full of memories that will stay with us for a long time.

Looking back, I’m reminded of how important it is to take the time to notice the beauty around us, even in the most unexpected places. The kids’ enthusiasm and curiosity were contagious, and it was a joy to see them learning and experimenting taking their shots. I’m already looking forward to our next photo walk, ready to chase the light once again.
